See a Giant Iceberg Fall Into the Sea

Researchers also managed to capture on camera a video that shows the noticeable violence and speed of the ice breaking event that is now ongoing.

Perhaps the most drastic and devastating effect of the sea level rise is that according to experts and satellite surveillance there are many more fractures and breaks going on not only in Greenland but in Antarctica as well, and this is completely certain when these glaciers are looked down from space.

The video shows a range of different iceberg formation styles captured during the calving event which began on June 22 at 11:30 p.m. local time and took place over approximately 30 minutes (the video has condensed the time of this occurrence to approximately 90 seconds).

The process by which ice breaks away from a glacier is known as calving. "By capturing how it unfolds, we can see, first-hand, its breath-taking significance". One such example is a monumental chunk of ice breaking off a glacier and washing into sea, something dramatically captured on video by a team of scientists in eastern Greenland last week.

It's hard to get a sense of scale from the video, but the researchers pointed out in a statement that this iceberg would cover most of Lower and Midtown Manhattan.

The video shows a wide and flat iceberg split and moves away from the glacier. Meanwhile, smaller pinnacle icebergs, which are tall and thin, can be seen calving off and flipping over.

In April this year, New York University received a $2.1 million, five-year grant from the National Science Foundation to better understand Antarctic glaciers and the forces behind sea-level rise.

He adds that the more they understand what is happening means that they can create a more accurate simulation to predict and plan for climate change.

The research is being carried by NYU's Environmental Fluid Dynamics Laboratory and NYU Abu Dhabi's Center for Global Sea Level Change-both directed by David Holland.

Earth's biggest glaciers are in frozen Antarctica, and their breakup would be catastrophic for sea level rise; the loss of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet would release enough water to raise global sea levels by almost 10 feet (3 meters).
