Roger Federer loses five-set match to Kevin Anderson

Federer needed only 16 minutes to win the first set against Mannarino

The Swiss eight-times champion and top seed was beaten 2-6 6-7 (5) 7-5 6-4 13-11 by eighth-seeded Anderson before a stunned crowd packed into a tension-filled No. 1 Court.

Kevin Anderson (8) narrowly defeated Gael Monfis in four sets to reach the quarterfinals.

Federer is now 266-3 after winning the first two sets.

In the semifinals, Anderson will face the victor of the matchup between American John Isner, the No. 9 seed, and Canada's Milos Raonic, the No. 13 seed. "I just kept telling myself this will be my day".

Tennis legend Roger Federer has been hailed for a flawless batting technique after he showed off his cricket skills at Wimbledon. "It's not the first time for me in the semifinals, but it is a win that I want to enjoy before I focus on the semis", he said.

Federer suffered his earliest exit at Wimbledon since a shock second-round defeat against Sergiy Stakhovsky in 2013. South Africa's Kevin Anderson celebrates after winning his quarter final match against Switzerland's Roger Federer.

Eyeing a ninth title at The All England Club, Federer ultimately paid the price for being unable to convert any more than three of 12 break-point chances in the four-hour, 14-minute cliffhanger on Court One. By the end I thought I did a great job not thinking about what was happening.

"I had my chances", Federer said, "so it's disappointing". That's my problem really'.

Federer had breezed into the quarter-finals and was imperious in the opening set.

South African Kevin Anderson outlasted Roger Federer 13-11 in the fifth set of their Wimbledon quarterfinal.

That took great self-belief, he added, knowing that he had never taken a set off 20-time major victor Federer in four previous meetings.

Meanwhile, after dropping the second set to Nishikori, Djokovic wrested back the momentum for good in the third, coming from 0-40 down at 2-2 to hold serve.

Federer seemed rattled and his forehand began to look vulnerable and it was that stroke which allowed Anderson a decisive break of serve at 3-3 in the fourth. And he had held serve 81 games in a row at the grass-court major, a streak that grew to 85 before Anderson broke him a surprising total of four times.

Three-time champion Novak Djokovic reached his eighth Wimbledon semi-final on Wednesday with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Japan's Kei Nishikori in a stormy Centre Court clash.

Anderson's serve is highly respected at this level, but he managed to meet the mark with an average of only 56 per cent of his first serves over the first two sets.
