President tears into May's Chequers deal

"There is no stronger alliance than that of our special relationship with the USA and there will be no alliance more important in the years ahead", the British leader said.

"And of course we will discuss foreign policy and defence and security issues, where we work really closely together with the US".

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders in response to questions about the president's Sun interview said in a statement: "The President likes and respects Prime Minister May very much".

He added: "We record when we deal with reporters".

Trump met with British Prime Minister Theresa May at her official country residence, Chequers, on Friday morning.

As his performance at North Atlantic Treaty Organisation showed on Thursday, Mr Trump takes the opposite approach, firing off scatter-gun, apparently off-the-cuff remarks in sometimes rambling responses which can surprise his hosts and his White House staff alike.

It comes after both attended a tense North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels where the United States leader called for members to pay more earlier this week.

Mr Trump said: "The Prime Minister and I worked very hard together at North Atlantic Treaty Organisation". It has never been more united, people are paying. "This is an incredible opportunity for our two countries and we will seize it fully".

For supporters, Trump and Brexit offer the prospect of breaking free from what they see as obsolete institutions and rules.

Our Brexit Insider Facebook group is the best place for up-to-date news and analysis about Britain's departure from the European Union, direct from Business Insider's political reporters. The photographs showing them holding hands and Mrs May's unexpected offer of a state visit to Britain showed the lengths she was willing to go to demonstrate the closeness of the trans-Atlantic "special relationship". "I actually told Theresa May how to do it but she didn't agree, she didn't listen to me", Trump said. And that is fine.

He also told the tabloid that he'd shared advice with May during Britain's negotiations with the European Union and she ignored it. "But it is too bad what is going on", he told the tabloid, Britain's best-selling newspaper.

The president also said he thought Boris Johnson, May's old rival for the Conservative Party leadership and her foreign secretary until he resigned last week in opposition to her Brexit plans, would "be a great prime minister".

If signing up to the Trump world view is the price of a deal, it's not worth paying", she tweeted, adding that Trump was "determined to insult" the prime minister."Our prime minister is so weak she still rolls out the red carpet for a man who does nothing but insult her.

The US president left Mrs May badly wounded when he criticised her negotiating style, lavished praise on Boris Johnson and attacked her Brexit plan in an interview with The Sun.

May's plan for the U.K.'s exit from the European Union is widely seen as describing a "soft Brexit", in that it would see the United Kingdom stay aligned with some European rules in order to maintain the free movement of goods.
