President nominates Brett Kavanaugh to US Supreme Court

Trump plays up suspense over momentous Supreme Court nomination

"I have long heard that the most important decision a U.S. President can make is the selection of a Supreme Court Justice - Will be announced tonight at 9:00 P.M.", Trump tweeted on Monday morning. The ads, costing a total of $1.4 million to run, will feature biographical information about the nominee and will be aimed at red state Democrats, including newly elected Sen.

"Bob Casey's opposition to President Trump's nominee before he or she has even been named shows he has given up any pretense of being a moderate voice", said NRSC Spokesman Bob Salera in an emailed release. Unlike the current Justices, Hardiman doesn't have an Ivy League law degree - a fact Trump said on the 2016 presidential campaign trail was a positive factor for a potential nominee if he became President.

Trump has said he plans to unveil his pick to replace outgoing Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy on Monday night after the longtime member of the court announced his intention to retire last month. Barry served alongside Hardiman as a federal appeals judge on the 3rd Circuit before stepping down previous year.

His wife, Lori Zappala Hardiman, "comes from a family of prominent western Pennsylvania Democrats", a report from a local Philadelphia TV station noted.

A fellow judge there, Maryanne Trump Barry, one of the president's sisters, reportedly has recommended him to her brother.

Barrett, who is 46, has less of a judicial record to review, having just been nominated to the appeals court by Trump past year.

Barrett has been somewhat dismissive of the notion of following Supreme Court precedents, the doctrine known as stare decisis.

Trump had little to say about his choice before the announcement.

In recent years the Supreme Court has made landmark decisions on fundamental and often politically charged issues ranging from same-sex marriage, abortion, gun rights, corporate money in elections, and free speech.

Barrett of IN, 46, serves on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit. "But this is really about the process and whether or not the corporate right is going to be in charge of picking the Supreme Court in a seat, in a nomination that's likely to tip the scales substantially". Judge Amy Coney Barrett is the favored nominee among the religious right. But Barrett told senators she would not let her staunch Catholic beliefs affect her legal rulings.

The US Supreme Court is the ultimate arbiter on contentious laws and disputes between states and the federal government.

He previously worked for Kenneth Starr, the independent counsel who investigated Democratic former President Bill Clinton in the 1990s. He's an appeals court judge - federal appeals court judge in D.C. And heading into the weekend, he was seen as a favorite.

He wrote a Minnesota law review article in 2009 arguing that presidents should be shielded from criminal investigations and civil lawsuits while in office.

In his remarks, Kavanaugh expressed his view of a judge's role. Republicans hold a narrow one-seat majority in the Senate.

Later in the week, the president also suggested that of the four reported shortlisted candidates, he had preferences, telling reporters: "I think I have it down to four people. We don't know who the nominee is going to be yet", Sen.
