Phil Mickelson penalized two strokes during final round of Greenbrier

Phil Mickelson watches his tee shot on the 12th hole during the third round of the Military Tribute at The Greenbrier golf tournament in White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., on Saturday.

Three weeks on from the Mickelson being penalised for intentionally putting a moving ball at the US Open, the five-time major champion caused further controversy during the final round in West Virginia.

Phil Mickleson had a bad Geenbrier Classic and earned himself a two-shot penalty thanks to his actions of stomping down on a piece of grass to improve his line of play.

The two-stroke penalty led to a double-bogey 6 for Mickelson, who opened the day nine back of the leaders. Mickelson could have simply moved his tee, taking that altered grass out of his line of play. He finished the week in a tie for 66th at 1 under par.

Three weeks on from his freakish actions at the U.S. Open, Phil Mickelson found himself at the center of another highly unusual rules controversy on Sunday.

Following the trampling, Mickelson cooly and calmly spoke to an official who said it was unfortunately probably a violation which Mickelson seemed to accept very quickly and calmly before moving on. "It's just one of those things".

Mickelson will now fly to Europe before playing a Monday practice round at Ryder Cup host Le Golf National outside Paris, followed by rounds at Gullane on Tuesday and Carnoustie on Wednesday prior to the start of the Scottish Open. "I've got to get my short game a little sharper".
