Peter Strzok hearing revealed one thing - Washington's partisan dysfunction

Rep. Steve Cohen

But the embattled Federal Bureau of Investigation agent challenged that, saying that he was let go because the text messages create the perception of bias, not that he was found to be biased.

Republican lawmakers who attended a closed-door hearing with ex-FBI lawyer Lisa Page touted her willingness to cooperate on Friday - in contrast with her ex-lover Peter Strzok, who testified for more than 10 hours on Capitol Hill Thursday.

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) made astounding claims against former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton on Fox News related to her personal email server and its lack of security.

In his first public comments since private text messages between Strzok and Page were disclosed, the agent concluded opening remarks with a pointed broadside against his antagonisers.

"I have always told the truth", Strzok said.

Mr Strzok denied that the Federal Bureau of Investigation was biased against then-candidate Trump and rejected that his actions in the Russian Federation probe after the 2016 election had political motivations.

Throughout the hearing, Strzok denied that any of his animus toward Trump affected his work, and said lawmakers were taking his words out of context.

The hearing was punctuated by chaos and open yelling as Judiciary Committee Chairman Robert Goodlatte said Strzok needed to answer Republicans' questions and suggested they might recess the hearing and hold him in contempt. Democrats objected to Goodlatte's repeated attempts to get Strzok to answer. He was removed from this team after the release of a series of personal text messages he had exchanged with a senior Federal Bureau of Investigation lawyer, Lisa Page, with whom he was having an affair, in which Strzok expressed his personal opposition to Trump. Both agents had been working on Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe at the time.

"Let me be clear, unequivocally and under oath: not once in my 26 years of defending my nation did my personal opinions impact any official action I took", he is expected to say.

"It wasn't the discovery of your texts, Mr. Strzok". Right?!" Strzok replied, "No.

The Justice Department's inspector general has criticized Strzok and Page for creating the appearance of impropriety.

Just hours after Strzok's outrageous hearing, Lisa Page was questioned behind closed doors.

Committee members sought to question Strzok about the texts and to determine how, if at all, his anti-Trump bias impacted the investigations.
