PayPal Apologizes for Demanding Payment From Dead Woman

PayPal sent the letter seen below to Lindsay and Howard Durdle

PayPal sent a recently bereaved husband a threatening letter demanding money and claiming his wife "breached contract" by dying while owing them money. The online payments system has apologized after mailing a letter to a woman in the United Kingdom three weeks after her death was reported to the company, CBS Seattle reports.

Lindsay, 37, had first been diagnosed with breast cancer about a year and a half earlier, but it spread to her brain and lungs.

A widower has revealed his horror after PayPal sent out an "insensitive" letter to his deceased wife saying her death was a breach of contract.

This photo of Lindsay and Howard Durdle was taken previous year.

Despite this, he received a letter addressed to his wife which said his wife owed PayPal about £3,200 ($5,685.80).it also said Ms Durdle was "in breach" of one of PayPal Credit's agreement.

Per the BBC, after 37-year-old United Kingdom woman Lindsay Durdle died of breast cancer that had spread to her lungs and brain on May 31st, 2018, her husband Howard Durdle says he provided Paypal with documentation including "her death certificate, her will and his ID, as requested".

PayPal had stated that a person's death is a 'breach not capable of remedy'.

When Mr Durdle initially contacted PayPal regarding the letter, he was told it was a bug, bad letter template, or a human error which had allowed the letter to be sent.

It goes on to explain that PayPal would take whatever legal proceedings would be necessary, including using debt collectors, to reclaim the money. Unfortuantely, the company will not be able to share the information because it constitutes an "internal matter".

In the time since, TNW contacted PayPal and we were told by a representative that the company is taking the matter very seriously.

PayPal has apologised for sending the letter, telling the BBC: 'We apologise to Mr Durdle for the distress this letter has caused.

He passed on the offending letter to BBC News in hopes of teaching PayPal, and other companies, a valuable lesson.

"I'm in a reasonable place at the moment ─ I've got quite a level head on my shoulders ─ and am quite capable of dealing with paperwork like this", Durdle, who is a member of the charity group Widowed and Young, said.

He said: 'If I'm going to make any fuss about this at all, it's to make sure that PayPal - or any other organisation that might do this kind of insensitive thing - recognises the damage they can cause the recently bereaved'.
