Papa John's founder calls resignation a 'mistake'

"I agreed, though today I believe it was a mistake to do so", Mr. Schnatter said in the letter, according to the Journal.

In the report last week, Forbes said Schnatter used the N-word during a media training session in May, and that the incident led the marketing agency to sever its ties with the company.

It also removed his image from all marketing materials and is requesting he stop making appearances.

Schnatter sent the memo over the weekend, criticizing the board for allegedly forcing him to step down before investigating the recent complaint against him.

Schnatter opened up about his use of a racial slur in an interview with Louisville radio station WHAS on Friday.

Schnatter, while still serving as Papa John's chief executive, said last November that the National Football League had hurt the pizza chain's sales.

Oregon State University's athletics department announced Monday that it was suspending its sponsor relationship with the company just days after Schnatter resigned as chairman of the board, a decision he has reportedly since said he regrets doing.

The letter from Schnatter's legal team, Glaser Weil, said the Board had no authority to remove him as director and said the board's actions were not in he best interests of the company.

He added: "I will not allow either my good name or the good name of the company I founded and love to be unfairly tainted".

Laundry Service representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Schnatter said the discussion only started when he objected to the agency's suggestion of hiring rapper Kanye West as brand spokesman because West "uses the "N" word in his lyrics".

Papa John's has also remained silent on the ousted CEO's claims and continues to distance itself from Schnatter.

During the May call, Schnatter tried to downplay controversial remarks he made last November about how the NFL was handling players protesting during the National Anthem. Later in the call, Schnatter brought up his childhood in IN saying, 'people used to drag African-Americans from trucks until they died'.
