Papa John’s is removing founder from ads after he used racial slur

“Regardless of the context I apologize,” Papa John’s founder John Schnatter said Wednesday

"By taking this action, we renew our community's commitment to speaking up when it matters, doing what is right and coming together as one team ... to heal and move forward", Bendapudi said at a press conference Friday.

On Wednesday, Schnatter acknowledged the truth of a Forbes story that said he used the N-word during a discussion about public relations with the company's outside marketing agency in May.

Bendapudi also explained she spoke with Schnatter, who supported the decision to remove the name so it won't be a distraction to the program, according to 93.9 The Ville.

Papa John's Cardinal Stadium will now be called simply Cardinal Stadium in the wake of a scandal involving the founder of the pizza chain whose company name has been attached to the stadium for years.

Asked whether she was daring the company to sue over the name change, Bendapudi said, "It's not that type of situation at all".

The deal provides that if he leaves the company, Schnatter can rename the building.

Top executives made a decision to remove Schnatter but details are still being worked out. "Regardless of the context, I apologize", the statement says. There is no clear recourse named in the contract that would allow the university to break the contract should a scandal like this happen.

While Schnatter has since resigned from his role with the pizza chain, the company is still dealing with the fallout of the controversy, and has now lost promotional deals with teams across baseball - the Washington Nationals, Miami Marlins, Tampa Bay Rays, Kansas City Royals, Seattle Mariners, and Baltimore Orioles have all either paused or cancelled relationships they had with the brand. He also spoke about his childhood in IN and said, there, people used to drag African-Americans from trucks until they died.

Major League Baseball's promotion with Papa John's has been suspended until after the All-Star break, the company said in a statement to Fox News on Friday. While the decision to rename the stadium was effective immediately, Bendapudi was not sure when signage will be removed from the stadium.
