Ontario cancels cap and trade, ends GreenON programs

Doug Ford

Ford's Progressive Conservative government says it aims to reduce gasoline prices by 10 cents per litre and lower energy bills by "getting Ontario out of the carbon tax business".

While the "wind-down" is effective, Ford's government has committed to honoring arrangements or contracts that have already been signed through programs for energy efficiency, insulations, and window retrofits. "I promised that the party with taxpayers' dollars was over and that this would include scrapping the cap-and-trade carbon tax slush fund".

Doug Ford said that when considering the future of the initiatives and programs begun earlier, the government will make the decision in each case, attracting money from the tax budget of the province.

According to Ontario's Auditor General, the cap-and-trade system is costing Ontario residents and businesses $8 billion annually, with a "negligible impact" on the province's carbon emissions, which is the whole goal of the system.

In an email statement to CBC, Simon Jeffries, a spokesperson for Ford said, "The previous government attempted to institute a cap on ticket resales with no way to enforce that cap, resulting in less consumer protection".

But Ford said businesses will benefit financially from no longer having to buy carbon credits, and Ontario will challenge Trudeau in court. On Tuesday afternoon, the federal government was already criticizing the change in direction at Queen's Park.

The debate about the environmental efficiency of cap and trade has become a hotly contested issue, with the pro and anti sides firmly entrenched in their positions, but what concerns many Ontario voters now is the financial cost of Ford's move.

Ford was sworn-in as Ontario's 26th premier last Friday.
