New Intel Prompts U.S. Government To Reopen Emmett Till Investigation

Till a 14-year-old black Chicago boy who was kidnapped tortured and murdered in 1955 after he allegedly whistled at a white woman in Mississippi

One year after the production of Timothy B. Tyson's, The Blood of Emmett Till, the federal investigation of the infamous murder of the 14-year-old black boy on account of two white men has been reopened.

After receiving a report in late March from the U.S. Justice Department with "new information", Congress has made a decision to further investigate the circumstances around his killing.

The renewed investigation was first revealed in a recent federal report, which didn't specify what new information investigators were acting on.

An explosive new book by Timothy B. Tyson called "The Blood of Emmett Till" came out past year and alleges that Carolyn Donham, the white woman at the center of the case, admitted to lying about the events leading up to the murder.

Emmett, a 14-year-old Chicago boy visiting family in MS in 1955, was brutally murdered after reportedly flirting with a white woman in a country store.

Two white men - Donham's then-husband, Roy Bryant, and his half-brother, J.W. Milam - were charged with murder but acquitted in the slaying of Chicago teen Till, who had been staying with relatives in northern MS at the time. A MS jury acquitted the two men responsible for his murder, and then a while later they confessed to the killing in a magazine. An all-white jury freed her husband and the other man even without it. A man who came to the door at her residence declined to comment about the FBI reopening the investigation. Both are now dead. Days later he was kidnapped, brutally beaten shot, then thrown into the Tallahatchie River.

Now, the Department of Justice is re-opening an investigation into Till's death.

Donham, however, is still alive and will turn 84 this month.

Till's remains were returned to Chicago where his mother insisted on a public funeral service with an open casket.

A MS prosecutor isn't saying whether federal authorities have given him any new information since they reopened an investigation into the slaying of Emmett Till in 1955. The FBI still conducted an inquiry, which included an exhumation of Emmett's body from an IL cemetery, for about two years to settle whether there were any state crimes that could still be prosecuted.

Donham, then 21 and known as Carolyn Bryant, testified in 1955 as a prospective defense witness in the trial of Bryant and Milam. According to the AP, she also stated that Till used an obscenity when speaking to her.

"He said, 'How about a date, baby?'" she testified, according to a trial transcript released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation a decade ago. She resisted and pulled away, but Till approached her and got her by the waist, she said.

When she spoke to Tyson in 2008, she acknowledged that it was "not true" that Emmett had grabbed her or made vulgar remarks. With jurors out of the courtroom, she said a "nigger man" she didn't know took her by the arm in the store.

Though a judge ruled Carolyn's testimony inadmissible in court, her husband and Milam were quickly acquitted. Donham told Tyson that "nothing that boy did could ever justify what happened to him".
