Netflix Android App Now Has Smart Downloads

Netflix makes it easier to manage downloaded shows on Android

You watch, we do the work. When enabled, the Netflix app will automatically download the next episode in your preferred show while connected to WiFi, replacing the most recent watched episode with it.

Netflix has introduced Smart Downloads, a new feature of the Android app that automatically downloads the next episode of a TV show. After all, you might not want to disconnect from that Wi-Fi network before your next episode is done.

Netflix on Tuesday announced a cool new feature that makes your download experience even better. It doesn't use any more storage than the last episode you watched and saves you having to delete old episodes before you can download more. This tells the Netflix application that you're now watching the season and they want to reduce the friction you may encounter from continuing the binge session. But the service can determine with "high confidence" that you'll probably want to continue watching a show you've downloaded. The feature is now live for Android phones and tablets.

The latest feature builds upon Netflix's "download" feature that was launched in 2016. Usually, iOS and Android apps are updated at the same time, or iOS users get the new features first and Android users sometime later (we're looking at you, Snapchat). Before you Smart Download any of those, however, this otherwise knowledgeless writer recommends you dive into as many consecutive episodes as you possibly can of Bill Nye Saves the World. It also only works with TV series - so it doesn't apply to movies, TV specials, or any other content. Say you download episodes 1-3 of season one.
