Health Officials Announce Half Of Kansas is at Risk Of West Nile Virus

West Nile virus is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. According to the agency, four mosquito samples and four dead birds tested positive for the virus since the beginning of the month.

According to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, the person who died was an adult, but the agency provided no further details to protect confidentiality.

Between 1999 and 2017, KDHE reported more than 600 cases of severe West Nile Virus infections and 30 deaths.

North Dakota is one of six states reporting human infections this year. Such symptoms include, but are not limited to: fever, headache, body ache, fatigue, nausea, and rash.

This year, some carry the West Nile virus with them.

West Nile virus is one of several mosquito-borne viruses that can be acquired in North Carolina.

SHA is now warning residents in the province's southeast and to take proper precautions before heading out.

One way they identify unsafe mosquitoes is by taking samples from their traps in the field and testing them in their lab. Most WNV infections occur in the late summer and early fall.

Health officials recommend staying indoors when mosquitoes are most active, at dawn and dusk, wear long sleeves and long plants while outside, use mosquito repellent and eliminate mosquito breeding areas. Officials are advising the public to remove standing water as well.

Horses should be kept inside during dawn and dusk, which are peak hours for mosquito activity.

Keep them outside by having tightly-fitting screens on all of your windows and doors. Change the water in bird baths and pet dishes at least every three days. Drain any standing water in your yard each week.

Wear shoes, socks, long trousers, and a long-sleeved shirt when outdoors for long periods, or when mosquitoes are most active.

If you use sunscreen, apply sunscreen first and inspect repellent second.
