Monster crocodile finally caught after 10 years on the run

Wildlife rangers in the North Territory captured a mammoth crocodile Monday

Authorities in Australia have caught a saltwater crocodile measuring nearly 5 meters (16.4 ft), one of the biggest on record, to stop it from reaching a populated area, the Department of Tourism said on Tuesday.

NT Parks and Wildlife wrote on Facebook the reptile was removed "to help prevent human interaction in the more populated areas".

"We've called it a lot of things over the years because it's been so hard to catch".

"He is the biggest crocodile ever removed from the Katherine River by the Wildlife Operations Unit", Duldig said in a statement.

"It's a bit of a thrill, but you've also got to admire the size of the animal and how old it is", Burke said.

Wildlife rangers in the North Territory captured a mammoth crocodile Monday. The saltwater crocodile is estimated to weigh more than 600 kilograms (1,300 pounds) and to measure out at 4.7 meters (15 feet), according to ABC News.

The croc has been relocated to a local crocodile farm.

While large crocs are territorial, Webb suspected the trapped croc had moved to and from the area where it was caught during the past 10 years.

So far this year, 190 of them as well as two freshwater crocodiles have been captured in the Top End region, according to data released by the government. "This is the biggest saltwater crocodile..."

The 1,300-pound predator was caught about 185 miles from the ocean and about 19 miles downstream from Katherine Gorge, a major tourist attraction outside the town of Katherine, the Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife officials said.

Generally, crocodiles live an average of 70-years, though a rare few exceed 100.
