Mike Pompeo heading to North Korea for nuclear talks

President Trump waves at the June 12 summit meeting on denuclearization with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore. U.S. intelligence officials are now reporting that North Korea has increased its production of enriched uranium for nuclear weapons

The evidence, collected since President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's June 12 summit in Singapore, points to preparations to deceive the United States about the number of nuclear warheads in North Korea's arsenal as well as the existence of undisclosed facilities used to make fissile material for nuclear bombs, the officials said.

"North Korea has made no new commitments to denuclearization, and in fact has backed away from its previous commitments", Abraham Denmark, Asia Program director of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, told a House committee in late June.

Evidence collected since the summit points to preparations to deceive the US about the number of nuclear warheads in North Korea's arsenal as well as the existence of undisclosed facilities used to make fissile material for nuclear bombs, according to the report.

North Korea will have to back up its words with verifiable actions, Bolton said.

Skeptics say the North has no intention of giving up its hard-won gains in developing a nuclear weapon that could target the USA mainland and is trying to buy time to persuade Washington to ease punishing economic sanctions that have begun to bite.

"There is absolutely unequivocal evidence that they are trying to deceive the US", the official said. It did, however, note that Pompeo and "relevant high-level" North officials will hold follow-up negotiations "at the earliest possible date" to see through the outcomes of the summit.

It will be Pompeo's first visit to Pyongyang since Trump and Kim held the summit in Singapore on June 12, when North Korea committed to work toward "complete denuclearization" and the USA promised a security guarantee. At a recent rally, he also said he had "great success" with Pyongyang.

A delegation consisting of basketball players, South Korean officials and local media left in two planes from the Seongnam airbase for Pyongyang around 10 a.m., Efe news reported.

Bolton on Sunday declined to comment on intelligence matters. USA intelligence agencies became aware of the nuclear facility in 2010.

North Korea and Washington have yet to negotiate the terms under which the North would relinquish its weapons, so Pyongyang can be expected to seek leverage in those discussions.

North Korea shut down its major Punggyeri nuclear site, released three American detainees and took steps to return the remains of the U.S. soldiers, while the USA suspended its joint military exercises with South Korea. Pyongyang has often had its own complaints about Washington over slow delivery of aid and imposition of sanctions.

North Korea has repeatedly demanded security guarantees in exchange for any denuclearization, arguing that the goal of the Kim regime's nuclear weapons program is to protect the communist dictatorship from a theoretical American attack.

"The expansion suggests that, despite hopes for denuclearization, Kim Jong Un is committed to increasing North Korea's stockpile of nuclear-armed missiles", David Schmerler and Jeffrey Lewis, the report's authors, wrote.

"If they have the strategic decision already made to do that, and they're cooperative, we can move very quickly", he told CBS' "Face the Nation" program. -North Korea summit in Singapore.

National security adviser John Bolton, meanwhile, said that the North's nuclear and ballistic missile programs could be dismantled within a year - a timeline that stands in contrast with the conclusions of many experts who say it would take several years even under the best of circumstances.
