Kim Jong-un opts for potato farm visit over Mike Pompeo meeting

S. Korea approves rare screening of N. Korea films

Several days previously, Pyongyang had slated the United States for seeking unilateral and forced denuclearization from North Korea.

President Donald Trump released a letter he recently received from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and praised the "great progress" being made in talks with Pyongyang.

However, officials say it could be months before excavations can begin and years until the remains are identified.

"President Trump and Chairman Kim Jong Un conducted a comprehensive, in-depth, and honest exchange of opinions on the issues related to the establishment of new U.S. -DPRK relations and the building of a lasting and robust peace regime on the Korean Peninsula", the leaders said in a joint statement.

According to a diplomatic source in Seoul, North Korean officials have yet to show up as of 2 p.m. when United Nations military officials already headed to the meeting point in Panmunjom, Yonhap reported.

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert told reporters in Tokyo on Saturday that the only thing Pompeo left behind in Pyongyang was a letter from Trump to Kim.

The two sides had been expected to discuss at the Korean Peninsula's demilitarized zone the return of USA troop remains from the 1950-1953 war - an arrangement that the State Department had announced after Secretary Mike Pompeo's visit to Pyongyang last Friday and Saturday.

Organisers have also sought to invite several North Korean moviemakers but are waiting for official approval.

The US military has since announced that 100 wooden coffins have been moved to the inter-Korean border in preparation.

United Nations honor guards carry on December 14, 1993 a soldier's remains who died during the Korean War.

North Korea is not messing around.

More than 36,000 US troops died in the three-year war, which ended in an armistice instead of a peace treaty, leaving the peninsula divided by one of the world's most heavily fortified borders.

That number includes 7,702 who are missing in action, with an estimated 5,300 believed to have been lost in the North, according to the Hawaii-based DPAA, which oversees the effort.

But he also acknowledged that a lot of work remained to be done, including on the issue of setting a timeline for denuclearization.

Shortly after the apparent setback was reported, President Trump tweeted the translation of a letter he had received from Mr Kim, in which the North Korean leader said: "I deeply appreciate the energetic and extraordinary efforts made by Your Excellency Mr President".
