Kerber books place in a second Wimbledon final

Serena Williams after beating Camila Giorgi

Germany's Angelique Kerber in action during the women's semifinal match against Jelena Ostapenko at the Wimbledon 2018 tennis championship in London on July 12, 2018.

This semi-final was billed as attack versus defence and it was the solid, reliable manner of Kerber that prevailed as she let an erratic Ostapenko, who was going for winners on nearly every shot, hand her a swathe of free points.

She will vie for her eighth Wimbledon title against German Angelique Kerber on Saturday in a repeat of the 2016 Wimbledon final, which Williams won in straight sets. "These are the matches I was working for since I was a kid".

Ostapenko, 21, had admitted she cracked under the strain of defending the French Open title when she lost in the first round last month.

"I know she played a lot of good matches where she came back from a score like that, when she has nothing to lose", Kerber said.

Kerber was beaten by Williams in the 2016 Wimbledon showpiece.

And the first Latvian woman to make the Wimbledon semi-finals was paying the price for more rash mistakes as the match slipped away.

It took Kerber two tries to serve out the victory, getting broken to 5-2.

"I am really happy and proud to be back in the grand slam final".

Williams, who missed Wimbledon a year ago due to her pregnancy, won the grass-court Grand Slam on her previous two visits in 2015 and 2016.

Kerber had to fend off another break point in her next service game, but eventually got the job done to book her fourth career grand slam final.

While it's unfair on the other players to merely write off their chances of challenging Williams, it's also slightly arbitrary to say the American can sweep all in her path given it is only her second grand slam since returning from maternity leave with her daughter still not a year old.

She is on a 19-match winning streak at the All England Club, with her last defeat coming against France's Alize Cornet in the 2014 third round.

Young firebrand Ostapenko's 30 winners far outweighed the 10 struck by the wily Kerber but the 36 unforced errors she committed on Centre Court made for an ugly balance sheet.
