Jones earns 1st career Cup win at Daytona

Kyle Busch Kyle Larson

At the end of a week in which talk of younger drivers needing to show force in NASCAR racing edged into the conversation, one did.

"Oh boy, how 'bout that race boys and girls?" Jones shouted to the crowd when he climbed out of his vehicle.

For Jones, a 22-year-old MI native driving in his first season for Joe Gibbs Racing, the breakthrough victory came in his 57th career start. "What a day", Jones said. My first Cup win, my first win at Daytona, my first superspeedway win. But to get here tonight, that's pretty awesome. "There's not much better than this one".

Jones passed Martin Truex Jr., who finished second, on the final lap to take the lead and record his first ever win in the Cup series. Stage two was also one by Ricky Stenhouse Jr. the rest of the top 10 on the stage included #34 Michael McDowell, #88 Alex Bowman, #95 Kasey Kahne, #13 Ty Dillon, #48 Jimmie Johnson, #42 Kyle Larson, #3 Austin Dillon, #6 Trevor Bayne and #31 Ryan Newman rounded out the top 10. The only lap Jones led was the last one.

Byron, who was knocked out 11 laps after Keselowski, responded to Keselowski's comments, claiming the wreck was more of Stenhouse's fault than his own. He spun onto the frontstretch grass.

STENHOUSE, LARSON CRASH: Kyle Larson lost control of his vehicle with 37 laps to go, apparently because of a tire issue, and his spin collected Stenhouse putting the field under caution for the sixth time. He was penalized a lap, drawing a complaint from crew chief Chad Knaus.

Stenhouse was involved in five crashes and was the root cause of two of them.

THE SECOND BIG ONE: The night's second major crash occurred on lap 65. Busch's No. 18 Toyota slide right and took out William Byron.

Brad Keselowski won the battle off of pit road and would lead the field at the start of stage 2 in the Coe Zero 400 at Daytona.

Things would go back to green with only 28 laps left in the stage and Keselowski still leading the pack. Cars in the following group were swept into the accident.

Defending race victor Ricky Stenhouse Jr. started the melee when he tapped and turned Keselowski, who was running third.

"For them to get it here at a really big race was cool to see".

"I should have wrecked him and sent a message to the whole field". Menard took a ride in the dirt on the backstretch, which tore up his auto. As the auto slid across the apron and adjacent grassy areas, its left front was damaged, and its hood nearly broke loose from the vehicle.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr., who was the race's defending champion, was involved in two of the wrecks, the first involving 22 cars in some way or another on lap 54.

Stenhouse tapped Kyle Busch and caused him to lose control.
