John Isner loses to eight seed in longest semifinal match at Wimbledon

Roger Federer Wimbledon

He will go on to play the victor of the semifinal game between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in Sunday's Men's final.

Kevin Anderson will play in his first Wimbledon final on Sunday after beating big-serving American John Isner 7-6, 6-7, 6-7, 6-4 26-24 in the semifinal.

Anderson will play again in the final on Sunday - hopefully there, a victor will be decided in four sets or less.

It is also the third shortest longest in tennis historty, falling just short of 2015 Davis Cup first-round match between Argentina's Leonardo Mayer and Brazil's Joao Souza, which went on for six hours and 43 minutes.

"I don't really know what to say right now", said Anderson.

"I apologise if I´m not more excited right now. At the end you don´t even feel that great out there, but at the same time I´m through to the final". Isner finished with 53 aces to Anderson's 49, and Isner during the fifth set broke the single-tournament aces record with his 214th.

But an athletic Djokovic had Nadal running around the court in the next game, bringing him forward to the net and lobbing the Spaniard before breaking back with a beautifully angled forehand.

The pair had not got on court before 8pm, despite only being the second match of the day, after Kevin Anderson and John Isner's six-and-a-half hour match delayed proceedings at the All England Club. However, Anderson and Isner are just beginning their fourth set, so the match between Nadal and Djoker will be delayed slightly.

After losing the second set, he turned into Vintage Djoker and won 12 of the next 16 games to return to the Wimbledon semis for the seventh time.

He played well in the latter two sets of his four-set triumph over Kei Nishikori - a match that lasted "just" 158 minutes - and created 14 break point chances in 17 return games. The defeat especially stings because marathon play is nothing new to the 33-year-old American.

On a critical point that helped him earn the break he needed to win the match, Kevin Anderson hit one of the most impressive shots you'll ever see. Anderson, who typically shows a reserved demeanor, would frequently fist-pump after winning a point. The South African is 1-5 against Djokovic. But the ex-Illini had his serve broken in Game 9 of that set before he double-faulted while up 8-7 in the tiebreaker.

However, I am utterly shocked that the markets are finding it hard to split Nadal and today's opponent, Novak Djokovic, for the second semi-final, which will commence no earlier than 1500 United Kingdom time.

Nadal, the 2008 and 2010 champion, trails Djokovic, the 2011, 2014 and 2015 victor, 26-25 in a rivalry which began at Roland Garros 12 years ago.

Djokovic was still awaiting his first win against Nadal on clay and he came agonisingly close, yet again, in the 2013 French Open semi-final. Not only is he advancing to the first Grand Slam semifinal of his career at Wimbledon, he and his wife, Highland Park native Madison McKinley, are expecting their first baby girl.

Victory on Friday would put him in a sixth Wimbledon final and 25th at the majors. He has one Slam final appearance in that span.
