Jeremy Hunt named UK's new foreign minister to replace Johnson

Face of Brexit Boris Johnson resigns, plunging May into crisis

The broadsheet version of Die Welt says the government is "wobbling" after the departure of Boris Johnson as Foreign Secretary.

Jeremy Hunt arrives at the Foreign Office in London after being appointed as the new Foreign Secretary, following Boris Johnson's resignation (Simon Dawson/PA).

How are you feeling about community pharmacy's future now that Matt Hancock has replaced Jeremy Hunt as health secretary?

As we mentioned on our live blog this morning, it was a claim that was swiftly debunked on Twitter, with Mark Treasure, chair of the Cycling Embassy of Great Britain, highlighting that when Johnson was at City Hall, it was the British government he blamed for not implementing European Union rules on HGVs.

With Britain due to leave the 28-nation bloc on March 29, 2019, European Union officials have warned Britain repeatedly that time is running out to seal a deal spelling out the terms of the divorce and a post-split relationship.

In his resignation letter, Johnson savaged May's strategy, accusing her of allowing an optimistic Brexit vision to become clouded by a failure of ambition.

It came after Friday's Chequers summit, where Mrs May appeared to have finally united a divided cabinet behind her Brexit proposal.

Earlier staunch Brexiteer Dominic Raab was named as Davis's replacement as Secretary of State for Leaving the EU.

Mr Buckland said there had been a realisation that "we all hang together or we all hang separately".

However the Daily Mail reported Mr Rees-Mogg said Mr Johnson would make a "brilliant" prime minister.

Brexit minister Steve Baker and unpaid parliamentary aides Conor Burns and Chris Green also resigned.

Solicitor General Robert Buckland said: "She talked about Corbyn, she talked about the alternative which is delivering the country to the sort of government that I don't think people have voted for and certainly any Conservative voter would be repelled by".

She told Sky News: "I'm happy to hear it will be published on Thursday".

The value of the British pound dropped on worldwide markets after Johnson's announcement, having risen after the announcement Friday that a Cabinet deal on Brexit had been agreed. "Mr Speaker, this is the right Brexit", she said to jeers from the opposition Labour Party.

But in parliament, her words suggested she had made a decision to face down the dissenters rather than change her plans. However, should she survive such a challenge, Conservative Party rules prevent her opponents from making another try to unseat her for at least a year.

The two resignations have left May badly exposed and raised questions over whether she will stand firm in her commitment to pursuing a "business-friendly" Brexit, or will be faced with more resignations and calls to quit herself.
