Israel to launch a mission spacecraft to the Moon

Despite financial pitfalls in recent years that almost saw SpaceIL's spacecraft grounded permanently, the team is confident that December's launch will take place on time.

Organizers said that the spacecraft carrying the Israeli flag will take photos and videos of the landing site as well as record itself during the landing.

The event was also attended by Israeli billionaire philanthropist and SpaceIL president Morris Kahn, who donated some $27 million to the project.

The spacecraft's design and development process began in 2013, two years after Yariv Bash, Kfir Damari and Yonatan Winetraub founded SpaceIL and registered for the Google Lunar XPRIZE competition.

SpaceIL CEO Ido Anteby said that the spacecraft is the smallest to ever land on the moon.

"It's going to show the way for the rest of the world" to send a spacecraft to the moon at a reasonable cost, said Ofer Doron, head of IAI's space division. The IAI-built spacecraft will be moved to the U.S.in November to prepare for the December launch.

SpaceIL was the only Israeli contestant in the global Google Lunar X Prize (GLXP) competition, which had offered a prize of $20 million to the first privately funded team to put a robot down on the moon, move it at least 1,650 feet and have it beam high-definition photos and video to Earth.

Israel is expected to make a historic Moon landing early next year with a Moon lander that is set to be launched late 2018. China this year plans to land a probe on the unexplored dark side of the moon, where radio signals from Earth can't be received.

"The State of Israel, which is already firmly planted in the realm of space in its military activity, must harness resources for the benefit of civilian space, which is an engine of innovation, technology and education around the world", IAI Chief Executive Officer Yossi Weiss said. This will take about two days to finish. Over the years, additional partners from the private sector, from government companies and from the academia have joined as well.

Although the Google prize expired in March without a victor having reached the moon, Israel's team pledged to push forward. The prize would help land an unmanned spacecraft on the Moon, the first one which is privately funded. Concurrently, the non-profit is continuing its efforts to raise the funds necessary to complete this mission. This way, they will raise interest in space among the people in Israel, and will also encourage young generations to study STEM.
