Instagram model attacked by shark in Bahamas

Instagram Model Katarina Zarutskie Savaged by Shark During Bahamas Vacation

Most of us have gone an extra mile or two to get that flawless Instagram shot. The sharks, however, will bite people as a defense if they are stepped on or bothered.

While floating on her back with her arms stretched out, one shark bit down onto an arm and pulled the 19-year-old underwater.

Model Katarina Elle Zarutskie was bitten by a nurse shark while on a family trip. Unfortunately, one of the sharks wasn't as friendly as advertised...because it swam right up to Katarina and BIT her on the arm!

Zarutskie has almost doubled her following on Instagram since her story came out; however, she has since made her account private, partly because she has "received a lot of rude and hateful comments from people that were saying ridiculous things", she told BBC.

The student conceded that she had been advised against going to the water alongside the marine predators prior to the incident.

"I could have honestly died", Zarutskie says.

Zarutskie told NBC that she was pulled under briefly when the reportedly five-foot shark made a decision to take a chomp on her arm then she "ripped [her] wrist out of the shark's mouth as fast as I could".

Stitches and antibiotics were all that was needed to fix her up-though there are still shark teeth fragments in her arm, and she'll likely have scarring-and Zarutskie doesn't hold a grudge against the shark.

According to the Exuma Online, a tourist website for the island claims nurse sharks are "harmless to humans" and promotes swimming with them as a "once in a lifetime adventure". They are known to have strong jaws to crush hard food such as shellfish and coral. Hocher added that Zarutskie appeared to have gone in the water during feeding time.

Zarutskie did not immediately respond to a request for comment. She's been accused of being a dumb blonde who is obsessed with social media. "I'm so blessed that it was just this", Zarutskie says. A photo she shared on Instagram showed the bite in action.

"I've been on so many different medications", she told WSVN-Ch.

Immediately after getting out of the water, Zarutskie went to a clinic at the marina and had her wound cleaned and wrapped.
