‘I think they like me a lot in the UK’

Americans warned to keep a'low profile in UK during Donald Trump's visit

US President Donald Trump has shrugged off protests planned across the United Kingdom ahead of his arrival there Thursday, claiming he is very popular in Britain because of his hardline stance on immigration.

The US President reached London after attending a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels, where he said member countries agreed to increase their military spending.

Evie is also excited to see the planned "Trump baby" blimp which is due to fly over London and Scotland when he visits.

"If Trump truly wanted to emulate Churchill, he would celebrate the peace and prosperity of Europe and seek to strengthen rather than destroy trans-Atlantic ties", said Amanda Sloat, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and a former State Department official in the Obama administration.

President Trump, who will also spend time with the Queen during his stay, said: "I think they like me a lot in the UK".

Asked about his views on the UK's plans for Brexit, Trump said: 'I would say Brexit is Brexit.

Trump has always been a supporter of Brexit and has expressed enthusiasm for a wide-ranging trade deal with Britain after it leaves the European Union, something heralded by Brexit supporters as being one of the great benefits of exiting the bloc.

May has had to defend Trump's visit in the face of fiery criticism from opposition lawmakers. A YouGov poll on Wednesday showed 77 percent of Britons had an unfavourable opinion of the president and just 50 percent thought his visit should go ahead. "I believe that the people in the UK, Scotland, Ireland, as you know I have property in Ireland, I have property all over, I think that those people they like me a lot and they agree with me on immigration", he said. "I'm very strong on immigration".

On Friday, demonstrators are expected to gather near Chequers, the Prime Minister " s country residence, where Prime Minister May and President Trump will hold a working lunch.

The organizers claim that flying the balloon is their right "pursuant to the rights of Freedom of Assembly and of Association", as well as the right to protest peacefully.
