How a father planned the execution of his two children

The body of their father, a 68-year-old named by media as John Edwards, was found at another address nearby on Friday.

NSW police believe the children, a boy, 15, and girl, 13, were killed around 5:20pm last night at their home, in the northwestern Sydney suburb of West Pennant Hills.

A woman in her 30s, believed to be the children's mother, arrived shortly after police.

Two handguns were found at the Normanhurst property.

"The 68-year-old male was the holder of a number of firearms".

Acting Assistant Commissioner Brett McFadden told reporters it appeared to be a "targeted incident" related to domestic violence.

"We understand that those handguns came into his possession lawfully earlier this year".

Police say they were "aware" of the father.

The teenagers had been at home by themselves, police say.

Some residents who lived in the exclusion zone were escorted back inside their houses upon arriving late to the horror that, on this occasion, had come too close to home.

He had been involved in a custody battle with the children's 36-year-old mother Olga Edwards for two years following the breakdown of their marriage.

A 68-year-old Australian father John Edwards shot his 15-year-old son and 13-year-old daughter on Friday in Sydney and later turned the gun towards him and shot himself.

"We will be extending that support through additional counselling services today", Mr McFadden said.

The mother was being treated by paramedics at the scene more than two hours after the fatal incident, but was later with friends away from the crime scene.

NSW Ambulance Inspector Kevin Sweeney described it as an "extremely distressing and stressful situation" for paramedics who arrived at the scene.

"It's very early in the investigation in what can only be described as a tragic set of circumstance for the family", Assistant Commissioner McFadden said.

"It's made me a bit shakey", he said.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull described the killings as "a bad, awful tragedy". "A lot of young people have been moving into the area".
