Greenpeace 'wanted to show nuclear vulnerability'

Greenpeace fly Superman drone into French nuclear power plant to show how easy they are to attack

A Superman-shaped drone and a miniature aircraft piloted by Greenpeace activists were smashed Tuesday morning against a building of a nuclear power plant near Lyon, with "no impact" on the safety of facilities according to the state-controlled EDF.

A Superman drone remotely controlled by Greenpeace activists crashes into a spent fuel storage building at a nuclear power plant in Bugey, France.

"This action has once again demonstrated the extreme vulnerability of French nuclear installations, designed for the most part in the 1970s and unprepared for external attacks", the post says, according to a translation from the ABC.

"This is a highly symbolic action: it shows that spent fuel pools are very accessible, this time from the air, and therefore extremely vulnerable to attack", Yannick Rousselet, head of Greenpeace France's anti-nuclear campaign, said in a statement.

France generates an overwhelming majority of its electricity from 19 nuclear plants across the country.

EDF reported that two drones had flown over the Bugey site during the incident, with one successfully intercepted by French police.

" This activity once more highlights the severe susceptability of this kind of structures, which include the highest possible quantity of radioactivity in nuclear plants", Greenpeace stated, inning accordance with Reuters.

In October previous year, Greenpeace activists breached security and launched fireworks over EDF's Cattenom nuclear plant.

Greenpeace activists in Sweden made a similar point in 2012 by using ladders to scale the perimeter walls of nuclear plant, as police barely batted an eye. Last week 19 activists were handed suspended prison sentences for breaking into another plant in November 2017.

Greenpeace's security breaches have sparked a parliament investigation into nuclear security, which is due to present its report on Thursday.

The group was also fined €50,000 ($58,300) by a French court in February in order to pay damages to EDF.
