Gov. Ige Signs Bill Banning Certain Sunscreens

Avoid sun damage by covering up with hats and long sleeves and limit exposure during the hottest part of the day

Following extensive research into the harmful effects of some sunscreen chemicals on coral reefs, Hawaii will become the first state to place a ban on those specific chemicals when the state's governor, David Ige, signs the proposal this week. Scientific studies have shows that oxybenzone and octinoxate are toxic to corals and other marine life.

"This bill is a small first step worldwide to really caring about our corals and our reefs in a way that no one else anywhere in the world has done", he said during the bill signing.

State Sen. Mike Gabbard, the Democrat who introduced the bill, told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser that it would be "a first-in-the-world law". Lim and other critics say people would be discouraged from wearing sunscreen altogether and skin cancer cases would increase.

"When you think about it, our island paradise, surrounded by coral reefs, is the ideal place to set the gold standard for the world to follow", he told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. "We've got [a] limited amount of time". "When you think about it, our island paradise, surrounded by coral reefs, is the flawless place to set the gold standard for the world to follow".

When the legislation enters into result, sun block consisting of oxybenzone and also octinoxate will just be readily available to those with a prescription from a doctor.

Johnson & Johnson, which owns Neutrogena, agreed with the position taken by its trade organization, the Consumer Healthcare Products Association.

The coral reefs surrounding Hawaii are hugely important to the USA state, aside from being home to marine life and drawing tourists for snorkelling and diving, a recent study found that coral reef provides protection for coastal towns from storm floods.

Up to 70 percent of sunscreens sold on the USA market contain oxybenzone and up to 8 percent contain octinoxate, which often appears on the labels as octyl methoxycinnamate, National Public Radio reported.
