Francesco Molinari Stared Down Tiger Woods To Win The Open Championship

I feel like my game’s in good shape’ Spieth aims to retain British Open title even as Woods lurks

He sent it bouncing and rolling along the firm turf, down a hill and onto the green to about 10 feet away for an eagle.

At the age of 35, he becomes the first Italian player ever to win a major, after keeping his cool in remarkable fashion when nearly all around him seemed to be losing theirs on a warm but windy afternoon on the Scottish coast. There were moments Saturday when he even held a share of the lead.

Spieth would finish with a five-over 76 to drop all the way into a tie for ninth at four under.

T2. Xander Schauffele (-6): It seemed like the 24-year old two-time PGA Tour victor played his way out of contention early with bogeys on No. 5 and No. 6 and then a double bogey on No. 7.

Molinari twice saved par with 8-foot putts on the 12th and 13th, and he took the lead for the first time with a short birdie on the par-5 14th.

"We were on the range kind of talking it over, and I said, 'Do we like driver again?' " Spieth said.

Americans have won the last five majors, but McIlroy has played well enough this week to believe he can claim a first major since 2014, when he did the double of British Open and US PGA Championship.

The wind is expected to be the strongest it has been all week today.

Woods, who shot 66 on Saturday, is paired with Molinari, two groups behind the final twosome of Spieth and Xander Schauffele.

An absorbing third round at The Open ended with defending champion Jordan Spieth forcing his way to the top of the leaderboard thanks to a six-under-par round of 65.

Paired with Francesco Molinari, Woods arrived Sunday morning at Carnoustie in his signature Sunday red and black, ready to tee off at 9:25 a.m.

But just when one of the greatest sporting comebacks of all time seemed on the cards, Woods failed to pull off a risky flop shot to get out of trouble on the 11th and ran up a deflating double bogey. He will try to become the first player since Harrington in 2008 to win golf's oldest championship in consecutive years.

His move started with a sudden decision.

"I'm not getting ahead of myself, I'm just in a good position".

"It would be, as you said, better on Sunday", Woods said in response to a question. He duffed his chip, then three-putted from off the green. It's the closest he's been to the lead in a major since five years ago at Muirfield. He looked like the Woods of old, and it felt like old times when everyone he was chasing began to collapse.

"Next thing, lo and behold, I'm tied for the lead, and then I'm leading it!" Andrew Landry (Razorbacks) did not make the cut.
