Facebook Recruits Top Google Chip Engineer To Spearhead Big Hardware Push

Facebook Hires Away Googler Who Led Team Behind Pixel 2’s Pixel Visual Core

Facebook has been working on its own chips and if a new report is to be believed, the company has poached one of the top chip developers at Google to help achieve its objective. Previously, Rabii was senior director of engineering at Google, where he worked on products including the Pixel smartphone's custom Visual Core chip, the Titan server security chip, and VP9 and AV1 video transcoders.

Besides Facebook, Apple, Google, Amazon, and Baidu have already embarked towards making their own hardware technologies. According to Bloomberg, Facebook hired Shahriar Rabii as vice-president and its head of silicon.

Facebook has hired a high-ranking silicon engineer from Google, as the social network ramps up its quest to build its own chips.

Should it move into chip design, Facebook would join several other major tech companies that have made efforts to reduce their reliance on Intel, Qualcomm and Nvidia. The semiconductors will help in the processing of information for the numerous data centers belonging to the Tech-giant.

Or Rabii could help create chips designed to power artificial intelligence (AI) workloads, which it can then integrate into its own hardware or create more AI systems to help purge trolls, abuse and terrorism content from its site and services. Later this year, the Mountain View, California-based search giant plans to release new Pixel phones with upgraded cameras and an edge-to-edge screen on the new larger model, Bloomberg News reported in May. Apple has been shipping its own custom main processors in iPads and iPhones since 2010, and has created an array of custom chips for controlling Bluetooth, taking pictures, and conducing machine learning tasks. It earlier launched an Oculus Go standalone virtual reality headset powered by a Qualcomm chip. Facebook in-house AI chip will enable the company to sync the hardware and software in line with deliverables.
