Facebook hit with first fine in Cambridge Analytica data breach scandal

Facebook on Tuesday was hit with its first fine related to the Cambridge Analytica scandal, which involved the data firm obtaining personal information on tens of millions of Facebook users without their consent.

The penalty could be just the first in what might become several fines for Mark Zuckerberg as the Information Commissioner's.

Updating on her investigation into the use of data analytics by political campaigns, Britain's Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham said she meant to fine Facebook 500,000 pounds ($663,850), a small figure for a company with a market value of $590 billion, but the maximum amount allowed.

In a statement issued in advance, information commissioner Elizabeth Denham warned that voters' faith in the political system was being eroded.

Facebook is facing a class action in Australia for allegedly breaching privacy laws over the Cambridge Analytica data harvesting scandal.

Facebook has said that a Cambridge University lecturer named Aleksandr Kogan collected the data legitimately through a personality quiz app but then violated Facebook's terms by sharing the information with Cambridge Analytica, a firm later hired by the Trump presidential campaign during the 2016 U.S. election.

She said: "We are at a crossroads".

The watchdog also plans to bring criminal charges against Cambridge Analytica's defunct parent company SCL Elections.

On Tuesday, U.K. watchdogs announced a $664,000 preliminary fine - the maximum amount allowed - after finding Facebook lacked strong privacy protections and overlooked critical warning signs that might have prevented Cambridge Analytica from trying to manipulate public opinion on behalf of clients around the world, including those who sought to withdraw Britain from the European Union in 2016. If other developers broke the law we have a right to know, and the users whose data may have been compromised in this way should be informed.

Facebook has said it will be reviewing the report and responding to the ICO soon.

OAIC is conducting its own investigation into whether Facebook breached the Privacy Act, which obligates organisations to ensure customers are notified about the collection and handling of their personal information.

"The number of Facebook users affected by this kind of data scraping may be far greater than has now been acknowledged".

The decision was welcomed by former Cambridge Analytica employee and whistleblower Christopher Wylie. But not all the data may have been deleted, according to some reports. "We have been working closely with the ICO in their investigation of Cambridge Analytica, just as we have with authorities in the United States and other countries". The region's competition chief said the social media company had provided misleading information about its privacy promises during its 2014 acquisition of the messenger app WhatsApp.

Politicians are calling for greater transparency from Facebook in light of the ICO fine. It's also about half of what the Spanish data protection authorities past year extracted from to the firm for privacy failings.
