Facebook has announced that it will expand the capacity of its King's Cross, London, offices in order to facilitate up to 6,000 employees.

The social network and King's Cross Central Limited Partnership (KCCLP) signed a deal that will see them take around 15 per cent of the total commercial space at King's Cross.

Last year, the company brought 800 new jobs to the United Kingdom and expects to employ 2,300 people in London by the end of 2018 in its current sites.

The UK is home to plenty of the tech giant's most famous innovations, from its enterprise collaboration tool Workplace to its social VR apps for Oculus.

The amount of office space leased by technology, media and telecom firms in central London previous year was 25 per cent higher than the long-term average, according to broker Knight Frank. A year ago the firm opened a startup incubator at its Rathbone Place office called LDN_LAB.

London's mayor Sadiq Khan also shared his pleasure at the Facebook news.

"Many of Facebook's most significant global products from Workplace to social VR applications for Oculus were developed right here in London, in what is now our biggest engineering base outside the United States".

Minister for digital, Jeremy Wright, added: "The UK is the top destination for tech investment in Europe".

"Today's news reflects our commitment to the United Kingdom and our desire to grow our business and the United Kingdom economy", commented Steve Hatch, Managing Director of Northern Europe at Facebook.
