ESO's Very Large Telescope Captures Sharp Images of Neptune | Astronomy

Впервые телескоп с Земли получил четкие снимки Нептуна

The instrument, called Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE, for short) works with the GALACSI, allowing the telescope to correct the turbulence at different altitudes in the atmosphere, which results in the images that have been captured.

The adaptive optics system of the telescope compensates for the effect of the Earth's atmosphere and allows you to take clear pictures from space without atmospheric distortion.

Some of the images compare before and after the laser tomography mode was added. The result is very sharp images seen here. MUSE was the first instrument to benefit from this new facility and it now has two adaptive optics modes - the Wide Field Mode and the Narrow Field Mode.

Growing importance for improving the quality of optical systems by utilizing adaptive optics technology is the key factor contributes the growth of global adaptive optics market.

The newly released photo of Neptune demonstrates the telescope's greater capabilities, showing that it is now possible to capture images from the ground at visible wavelengths that are sharper than those taken by Hubble, a telescope that orbits the earth.

ESO's ground-based telescope had an upgrade that now allows it to rival the imaging capability of NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. This technology filters out nearly all of the atmospheric blurring encountered by terrestrial based telescopes.

Essentially, the Earth's atmosphere distorts the appearance of things in space, causing stars to twinkle and blurring distant objects.

These atoms serve as laser guide stars, and the light they bounce back is used to measure atmospheric turbulence.

It will enable astronomers to study in unprecedented detail fascinating objects such as supermassive black holes at the centres of distant galaxies, jets from young stars, globular clusters, supernovae, planets and their satellites in the Solar System and much more. It is manifested by pointing 4 intensely bright lasers, each of which are beamed out of 30-centimeter apertures, into the sky around unit 4 of the VLT. The image on the right is the view from the Narrow-Field Mode of MUSE when adaptive optics are switched on. The light from these "stars" is then analyzed to determine how it is being distorted by passage through the atmosphere.

This will be followed in a few years by the powerful new instrument ERIS. Although there is one drawback - the new form of correction (which is also a form of tomography) only works over a small area of the sky.
