Emmys 2018 Nomination Snubs - Who Was Left Off List

2018 Emmy Award Nominations

The streaming service led the nominations in totals by platform with 112. That's up from a quarter of the field past year, when Brown ("This Is Us") and Glover ("Atlanta") won top acting awards.

NBC's "This Is Us", the show about a multicultural family that premiered to huge critical acclaim previous year, received its second nomination for drama series.

The 2018 Emmy nominations were announced with HBO's "Game of Thrones" leading the way with 22 nods.

It was a very strong freshman class, and all five shows are back this year.

"Game of Thrones" roared back onto the Emmy battlefield, topping Thursday's nominations with 22 bids but with a formidable opponent in last year's victor "The Handmaid's Tale", while a streaming platform made history by earning the most bids for the first time.

The last time there were no freshman dramas in the top category was 2009 when sophomore Mad Men won its second straight best series title.

"Among the welcome highlights, the Television Academy recognized the final season of "The Americans", Sandra Oh for her standout starring performance in BBC America's "Killing Eve", Issa Rae for HBO's "Insecure" and Ted Danson - representing one of the few major-network series to break through - for NBC's The Good Place". There are the nods that we could've predicted, such as The Handmaid's Tale and American Crime Story, both of which received multiple nominations.

That includes supporting actor in a comedy series, with black actors Tituss Burguss ("Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt"), Brian Tyree Henry ("Atlanta") and Kenan Thompson ("Saturday Night Live") and Tony Shalhoub ("The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel"), of Lebanese descent, competing with Louie Anderson ("Baskets") Alec Baldwin ("Saturday Night Live") and Henry Winkler ("Barry").

Only one of this year's categories, supporting actor in a drama, lacked any performers of color. She wasn't nominated for an Emmy in 2017, either.

"It has been another exceptional year in television marked by extraordinary storytelling from a wealth of diverse and innovative content creators", Washington said in a statement.

The most star-studded category, as is often the case, was best actor in a limited series or TV movie, where Antonio Banderas, Benedict Cumberbatch, John Legend and Jeff Daniels all picked up nominations.

The 70th Emmy Awards ceremony will be held at the Microsoft Theatre in downtown Los Angeles on September 17.
