Donald Trump claims relationship with Theresa May is 'very good'

Donald Trump speaks to reporters on the South Lawn before boarding Marine One and departing the White House

U.S. President Donald Trump's first official visit to the U.K.is off to a contentious start with the President challenging Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit strategy and highlighting her political troubles.

In the wake of the interview, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders issued a statement that appeared aimed to smooth things over.

The Politico website described Mr Trump's interview as "one way to break up a special relationship".

During his 28 hours there, Trump had disparaged longtime North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies, cast doubt on his commitment to the mutual-defense organization and sent the 29-member pact into a frenzied emergency session.

"We have enough difficulty with the European Union".

"If they do that, their trade deal with the United States will probably not be made because we have enough difficulty with the European Union", Trump told The Sun.

In an interview with The Sun, Trump said May's long-awaited blueprint for Brexit, published this week, would "probably kill" any future trade deal between the USA and U.K. He also said May's arch-rival Boris Johnson-who resigned as foreign secretary on Monday in protest at the blueprint-would "make a great prime minister".

"I would have done it differently". She should negotiate the best way she knows how.

Labour Party foreign affairs spokeswoman Emily Thornberry told ITV's Good Morning Britain on Friday that it was "extraordinarily rude of Donald Trump to behave like this". The president opened the day by reviewing a private military exercise alongside May at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

Trump added: "I guess when they put out blimps to make me feel unwelcome, no reason for me to go to London".

Plans for Trump's two-day visit largely avoid London, where he spent just a few hours overnight at the American ambassador's residence in central Regent's Park.

His meeting with May will take place in her Chequers country residence on Friday, followed by tea with Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle.

Trump and first lady Melania Trump attended a gala dinner in their honor Thursday hosted by the prime minister at the 17th century Blenheim Palace, 100 kilometers northwest of London.

Vickers added: "He would be wise not to attempt to kiss her, and I don't expect for a moment that he will". "Now he might not like the current president, but I represent the United States". It is not considered appropriate to call the Queen by her first name - a gaffe that Nelson Mandela made in 2014 - and it is never okay for people to use her nickname Lilibet, which is reserved exclusively for very close family members.

With its straw-blond hair, questionable face tan and unmistakably out-of-proportion hands, a blimp meant to depict President Donald Trump as a screaming baby flew outside the Parliament building in London Friday.

Around the time Melania is visiting children, the giant Trump baby is due to be flying in the air outside the House of Commons, with liftoff scheduled for 9.30am and the inflatable due to fly in the air until 11am.

Trump said Khan had done "a very bad job on terrorism" and said he had "not been hospitable to a government that is very important". The president claimed Europe is "losing its culture" because of immigration from the Middle East and Africa.

"I think the immigration, allowing the immigration to take place in Europe is a shame", he said. "But when they make you feel unwelcome, why would I stay there?"
