Donald Trump casts doubts over Theresa May's Brexit stance

President Donald Trump will get the red-carpet treatment on his brief visit to Britain beginning today: military bands at a gala dinner, lunch with the prime minister at her country residence and tea with the queen at Windsor Castle before flying off to one of his golf clubs in Scotland.

Trump will travel by helicopter once there, making it unlikely he'll see protests firsthand.

Meanwhile, in the capital city thousands will gather in a various of protests to voice their views against the United States president, including a march that could be attended by as many as 50,000 people and a flying protest involving the "Baby Trump" balloon. It will be a deliberately low-key arrival with United Kingdom government sources saying that there will be no "red carpet treatment".

She's planning to attend anti-Trump protests.

The US president has angered many in Britain in the last two years with a series of actions and pronouncements. A YouGov poll on Wednesday showed 77 percent had an unfavorable opinion of the president and just 50 percent thought his visit should go ahead.

He said: 'I am looking forward to greeting Mr Trump on behalf of the UK Government when he arrives in Scotland on Friday.

British law requires any petition supported by more than 100,000 people to be considered for parliamentary debate, even though there was no serious attempt to prohibit Mr. Trump from coming to Britain. There was no vote and no ban was imposed.

Ignoring all diplomatic niceties, the convention-shredding USA president set up the four-day visit with a rebuke of his beleaguered host as she battles to stop her government falling apart over Brexit.

Shrugging off the plans for mass protests, which on Friday will include a giant baby-shaped blimp bearing Trump's features, he said in Brussels: "They like me a lot in the UK".

It is not a state visit, so the President will stay with the USA ambassador in London instead of being hosted by the Queen.

The state visit has never actually materialized, partly due to fierce opposition to it in many quarters of Britain.

While she hopes the Trump visit will focus on trade and strengthening security ties, it is likely to be heavy on rhetoric about the transatlantic "special relationship" and short on specifics such as any details of a post-Brexit trade deal.

When asked about Trump's remarks, May said in Brussels: "What we are doing is delivering on the vote of the British people. that's what our proposal does".
