Why President Trump Just Lost Over 100,000 Twitter Followers

Washington Post reports that Twitter would specifically be removing locked accounts from follower counts across profiles globally.

"The people who are doing the clean up on Twitter should be given the task to deal with graft in Kenya, I think they will wipe it out completely", said one Twitter user.

Other regular Twitter users have noticed their accounts dropping today thanks to the purge, while others didn't notice a change at all to their accounts.

Twitter Inc.'s top executive didn't slide by unscathed in the social-media site's crackdown on fake followers. Meanwhile, Mr. Obama lost about 2 million, leaving him with 101 million overall.

Pop music artist Katy Perry, whose account is the most followed, lost more than 2.8 million followers on Thursday, a 2.6 percent fall from the day earlier.

Outspoken political blogger Cyprian Nyakundi and social media influencer Christian Dela have suffered a huge blow losing over 1 million followers combined.

Well, it is now happening and people have started noticing the drop in follower accounts.

Some of the world's biggest celebrities have lost millions of Twitter followers after the company cracked down on "locked" accounts.

Twitter said the accounts are locked after the platform detects "sudden changes in account behavior", which includes tweeting out a large number of unsolicited replies, sharing links that are misleading or being blocked by a large number of users that have been mentioned by the account. This week, the company said it will remove these from profiles, reducing the number of followers users have.

Kenyans with a significantly small following also faced the purge with some reporting they had lost between 100-200 followers by Friday morning. "We understand this may be hard for some, but we believe accuracy and transparency make Twitter a more trusted service for public conversation", Vijaya Gadde, Twitter's Legal, Policy and Trust & Safety Lead, said in a blog post.
