Dead, 70 Injured in Turkish Train Derailment

Turkish authorities under Erdogan have over the last years sought to modernise Turkey's once ramshackle rail network building several high speed inter-city lines

Several people have been killed and others injured after a train came off the rails in northwest Turkey, Turkish media has reported.

Turkey's official Anadolu news agency said two engineers were called in for questioning at the prosecutor's office.

The Health Ministry put the number of fatalities at 10 and the number of people injured at 73.

The train, with 362 passengers and six crew members on board, had been travelling from Edirne, a city in Turkey's northwest, to Istanbul.

The transport ministry said the accident occurred after the railway track slipped from its original position because of torrential rainfall. "Many of those injured have been taken off the site", Mehmet Ceylan said. "The accident happened because of adverse weather conditions", he added.

The Turkish army said in a statement that it had sent helicopters to the scene.

Reports said the surrounding area was muddy due to recent rains.

The Turkish prime ministry says "there are citizens who have been injured and who have lost their lives".

The train derailed in a village in Tekirdag province.

Turkey's rail network has been hit by several fatal accidents in recent years.

People receive help from medical personnel after a train came off the rails due to heavy rain and a landslide on to the tracks near Corlu in Tekirdag province.
