Corning announces Gorilla Glass 6 to be stronger than ever

Corning Gorilla Glass

An all-glass body might seem fragile at first, but if Gorilla Glass 6 is as tough as Corning claims it is, future devices shouldn't have trouble surviving a few drops before the phone chasis is damaged.

Corning today unveiled its next generation Gorilla Glass 6 cover glass for consumer devices. As you might expect, everything is bigger and better this time around, which means that Gorilla Glass 6 is roughly two times better at surviving drops from 1-meter than its predecessor. To improve cover glass performance, Corning scientists developed and engineered an entirely new material to address the challenge of multiple drops.

According to a recent study from Toluna, people drop their phones an average of seven times a year with more than 50 percent of those drops occurring at a height of one meter or less. Under the same test conditions, competitive glass compositions, such as soda lime and aluminosilicate, did not survive the first drop. It's able to do so because Corning chemically strengthened the material by using higher levels of compression over their previous release. Corning, the company behind Gorilla Glass, often touts the strength of its glass options, and continues to do so with its latest iteration, Gorilla Glass 6.

The new glass cover is also created to work with newer technologies like thinner bezels and wireless charging. This is apparently twice as many drops that Gorilla Glass 5 can withstand.

The new Gorilla Glass 6 product is now being evaluated and put through its paces by multiple Corning customers, of which Apple is likely one. It's getting better scratch resistance, too. Take a look at the video below for more details.
