Champion Russell Knox eyes Ryder Cup | Ireland

Russell Knox sinks incredible back-to-back putts to win the Irish Open

But Fox then sunk a long putt to put the pressure on Fox and his miss meant he was unable to force a second play-off hole. The son of former All Black outhalf, Grant Fox, had a chance to win the top prize on his final hole but just didn't hole out from 10 feet.

McIlroy will spend several days in London at the start of this week before stepping up his preparation for Carnoustie, where he made his Open debut as an 18-year-old and won the silver medal for leading amateur.

For Fox, while he will have been gutted to come up short, he's assured of a place at the Open Championship in two weeks time at Carnoustie, as will the victor.

The pair finished a shot clear of Spaniard, Jorge Campillo and two clear of the defending Champion, John Rahm.

Somehow, he sunk it again, roaring with delight, sending the crowd into raptures, and leaving Fox with a 12-footer to stay alive.

World number five Rahm looked out of contention following a triple bogey at the second but an eagle at the sixth undid some of the damage and his four closing birdies included a tap-in at the 18th after his wedge approach hit the pin.

The win is likely to lift Knox inside the world's top 50 as he prepares to return to home soil for next week's Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open at Gullane. He has boosted his chances of making Europe's Ryder Cup team for the match against the United States in France in September.

Two years ago, European captain Darren Clarke opted not to hand US-based Knox a wild card as he instead picked Lee Westwood, Thomas Pieters and Martin Kaymer.

Then in the play-off he had an nearly similar putt to extend the play-off but his effort lipped out and Russell Knox was able to celebrate a first Irish Open win.

Knox also eagled the fourth from just six feet and he added birdies from six and 15 feet on the sixth and 10th.

Gunning now for his first Major after a Rolex Series win worth $1.16 million, he said of his 72nd hole putt: "It's unbelievable".

Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy were the only Irish players to finish below par.

As for McIlroy, he left Ballyliffin feeling better about his putting after getting an overnight message from his putting whisperer Brad Faxon on his body language.

"It maybe wasn't quite as good the last three days, but I putted a lot better today".
