Campaign Underway To Get Green Day's 'American Idiot' To UK Number One

But in the UK, "American Idiot" was a smash, peaking at No. 3 in 2004.

Trump is set to make his first visit to the United Kingdom as President from Thursday to Sunday this week, where he will meet with British Prime Minister Theresa May and Queen Elizabeth II. A giant balloon representation of the president wearing only a diaper is set to fly around London with full approval from Mayor Sadiq Khan.

And now another Trump-trolling campaign is bearing fruit.

As Trump prepares to visit the United Kingdom on Thursday following the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Belgium, cheeky UK protesters are trying to push Green Day's 2004 hit "American Idiot" back to the top of the charts to welcome him.

Its renewed interest comes as a result of a fan campaign to get the song to UK No.1 in time for President Trump's unofficial visit to the country. "Are you in?" The campaign's Facebook page reads. "We're doing this anyway".

"American Idiot" wasn't a chart hit when it was released in the United States, stalling at No. 61 on the Hot 100. Trump arrives on Thursday for a four-day visit.

The subliminal mind-f**k America.

American Idiot was a huge hit for Green Day when it came out in 2004, targeting the George W Bush administration, it was released a year after the U.S. invaded Iraq.

To be fair, not everyone's knickers are in a twist across the pond about Trump's visit.

On part of the planned protests, there is also an inflatable Trump baby expected to soar over the capital city.

The prep work, one constable told The Guardian, is akin to what would happen "if London was burning down".

"American Idiot" was also the name of Green Day's 2004 album, which was adapted to a Tony-award winning stage musical in 2009.

Green Day bassist Mike Dirnt tweeted his support for a similar campaign back in April when Trump's visit was announced.

Broadway World remembered that Trump knows "American Idiot" - at least in its stage version.
