By 2019 Israeli spacecraft is setting a target for landing on moon

Israel Set to Land Spacecraft on Moon in Historic First

The company SpaceIL the Israeli state concern Israel Aerospace Industries announced that their lander will be launched in December and will make a soft landing on the moon on 13 February 2019.

It will be launched via a rocket from American entrepreneur Elon Musk's SpaceX firm and its mission will include research on the moon's magnetic field. SpaceIL says about $88 million has been invested in the project to date, mostly from private...

In the coming months the spacecraft will undergo a series of intensive checks and tests at IAI, to prove that the lander will withstand the launch, flight and landing conditions, said Dr. Ido Anteby, SpaceIL CEO.

Kahn said: "After eight challenging years, I am filled with pride that the first Israeli spacecraft, which is in its final construction and testing phases, will soon be making its way to the moon". SpaceIL President Morris Kahn has donated about $27 million to the effort and made a decision to proceed even after the contest deadline passed and effectively ended without any finalists achieving the goal.

Other countries have been successful in crushing scientific investigations into the surface. But only the U.S. has landed people on the moon. The spacecraft will orbit the Moon for nearly two months before landing, where it will record and send video and conduct some small science observations using a magnetometer.

The project began as part of the Google Lunar XPrize, which offered United States dollars 30 million (25 million euros) in prizes to encourage scientists and entrepreneurs to come up with relatively low-priced moon missions. "When the rocket is launched into space, we will all remember where we were when Israel landed on the moon". It is estimated to be six and half feet diameter and four-feet high, along with the capacity to achieve a most extreme speed of 22,370 miles for per hour.

The aim of the mission is not only to put an Israeli spacecraft on the moon, but to inspire a future generation of Israelis to pursue careers in math, science and engineering, said Joseph Weiss, IAI's president and chief executive and a founder of Israeli communications and media technology developer Amdocs Ltd.

Morris Kahn, South African-Israeli tycoon, owner of SpaceIL, who has given US$27 Mn to the project, was very enthusiastic: "The dispatch of the first Israeli airship will get pride for Israel, in the 70th year".
