Brendon Hartley has a massive accident during Practice 3 of the British GP from Silverstone

Haas's Romain Grosjean and Red Bull's Max Verstappen were other two drivers who crashed during the practice session on Friday. The left front suspension failed as soon as the Toro Rosso driver hit the brakes and he couldn't slow before running into the gravel trap, flipping, and hitting the barriers.

Neither Valtteri Bottas nor Sebastian Vettel were able to match their respective team-mates, placing third and fourth, the Finn six-tenths down on his Mercedes counterpart, and Vettel 1.1s behind his title rival.

The session resumed after a 13-minute stoppage.

Hartley was speeding down the Wellington Straight, reportedly at 200 miles per hour when a failure in front-left suspension and steering caused the crash.

Lewis Hamilton won pole position for the race.

With only two hours to go until qualifying starts, the Red Bull junior team face a race against time to get Hartley's auto ready.

Miraculously, the 28-year-old emerged from his destroyed vehicle, and walked away without significant injury.

Toro Rosso chose to keep Pierre Gasly in the garage to inspect his auto and to see what happened to Hartley's vehicle.

Marcus Ericsson capped an encouraging session for Sauber by rounding out the top 10, in front of Force India duo Esteban Ocon and Sergio Perez, with Fernando Alonso the lead McLaren driver in 13th spot.

Gasly's early time, prior to Hartley's failure, left him 19th on the leaderboard.
