Babies given solid food early sleep better, study claims

Feeding your baby solids early may help them sleep, study suggests

Babies given solid food plus breast milk from three months sleep better than those who are exclusively breastfed, according to a new study. Half the babies were exclusively breastfed until six months of age, the other half were introduced to a variety of foods including some that are associated with allergies, including peanuts and eggs.

There's also the question of whether longer sleep is actually a good thing for babies - although it clearly can be helpful for parents, Kim noted.

But officials are understood to be reluctant to alter the advice - which is already ignored by the vast majority of parents. Early introduction of solids could cause harm in infants who aren't developmentally ready to chew and swallow, he explained, while starting solids can also lead to earlier weaning, reducing the benefits of breastfeeding.

It also resulted in babies sleeping two hours more each week and reduced the number of times they woke up in the night.

It's been proven that the babies from the second group, who were breastfed and were given solid food have slept for longer and have woken up less frequently - overall, their sleep problems were nearly non-existent, in comparison with those babies who were only fed with breast milk.

The study by King's College, London, and St George's, University of London, found that moving that timeline up by three months has positive effects for both moms and babies.

"An added benefit (of early introduction of solids) is that it seems to confer better sleep for the children", said Gideon Lack, professor of paediatric allergy at King's College London, and a co-author of the research.

More than 1300 healthy breastfed three-month-old babies were divided into two groups at random.

And he said that some babies who frequently cough or splutter when drinking milk may struggle to eat solids - and for those children solids should not be introduced too early.

His team tracked 1,300 babies who had each been exlusively breastfed until three months.

Some babies like to start with mashed foods.

Child food experts at University College London advised parents to choose bitter vegetables such as broccoli, spinach or cauliflower as their baby's first solid food.

"When it comes to the recommendations for mothers and their children, I think it's still important to try to aim for exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months", he added.

More significantly, the group of babies on early solids reported half the rate of the type of serious sleep problems, such as crying and irritability, which make it less likely that parents are going to get back to sleep.

Professor Lack said decisions about whether to change the United Kingdom recommendations should stay in the hands of officials, but added: 'Guidelines are already changing around the world'.

The new data come from the Enquiring About Tolerance (EAT) study, which involved 1,303 infants and was created to investigate whether introducing solid foods earlier might help prevent food allergies.

'We found a small but significant increase in sleep duration and less frequent waking at night.

Officials, however, insisted mothers should continue to follow the current advice until new guidance is published.

She said: "These are interesting findings from a large randomised controlled trial".

Despite the official piece of advice, about 75% of mothers gave solid food to their babies before five months - 26% of the babies were waking up at night frequently because of this reason. If there is any doubt about what's best for your baby, please seek advice from your doctor or health professional'.

Responding to the study, Prof Mary Fewtrell, nutrition lead at the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, pointed out that guidelines for infant feeding are now being reviewed.

"However, the evidence base for the existing advice on exclusive breastfeeding is over 10 years old, and is now being reviewed in the United Kingdom by the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition".
