American woman, 27, killed by stray bullet outside Mexico City restaurant

Mirutenko's sister Roma Mirutenko right says she doesn't know how she will live without her

Police said a gunman rode up on a motorcycle and was aiming for the restaurant's bouncer, but missed and hit Mirutenko in the head, KGO-TV reported.

The woman was apparently struck by a stray bullet, according to the Mexico City Attorney General's Office. Through the first four months of 2018, Chicago had 154 murders and Mexico City was at 382-but the Mexican capital population is 8.8 million compared with Chicago's 2.7 Nevertheless, in March, the U.S. State Department posted a travel advisory for Americans considering a visit to Mexico City. Memories her family is holding onto dearly with a message for everyone: "When you get home tonight, give your loved ones a hug, kiss, and tell them how much you love them".

Mirutenko, 27, was in Mexico celebrating her first wedding anniversary and had just told her family how safe she felt.

"A year ago, we were selecting flowers for the wedding", said Wasyl Mirutenko, the dead woman's father, in an interview with ABC.

Mirutenko, who was with her husband and two friends, was taken to the hospital, where she died.

"We extend our honest condolences to friends and family members of the deceased".

"She always went out of her way to make me feel special", Roma said. "The U.S. Embassy in Mexico City is providing all appropriate consular services to her family. I'd give my life if she could just come back", said Natalie Mirutenko.

Since March, the State Department has told USA citizens not to travel to four Mexican states because of the high levels of violent crime found in each.

Mirutenko worked as a senior investor relations analyst at Nektar Therapeutics in San Francisco. San Francisco's Nektar Therapeutics, where Mirutenko reportedly worked, released a statement that said "Tatiana was a bright and passionate rising star".

"She was always willing to help on any project across the company and had an incredibly strong work ethic", Ms Ruddock said.

The State Department is advising tourists to reconsider travel to Mexico State, where Mexico City is (shown in orange, center).

"Many throughout Nektar, and outside the company, valued her positive energy, insight and sheer enthusiasm for life", the company said in a statement.

Her body will be flown from Mexico back to Chicago, where she will be buried, on Tuesday.
