America has just one Blockbuster store left

Alaska’s Blockbuster video stores closing, leaving just one left

Alaska's final two Blockbuster video stores will rent out their last movies and close up shop at the end of the week, management announced Thursday - leaving the us with a single remaining location.

Blockbuster Alaska District Manager Kelli Vey and General Manager Kevin Daymude took to Facebook to issue the following message regarding the Alaskan closures.

Blockbuster Alaska announced the closure of its two Anchorage stores, saying inventory will be liquidated through the months of July and August.

General manager Kevin Daymude is setting up a display of Russell Crowe movie memorabilia at the Blockbuster store on DeBarr Road in Anchorage on Wednesday, May 2, 2018, which includes the leather jockstrap Crowe wore in the movie "Cinderella Man".

Daymude says the buzz from the Oliver connection brought business to the store. By this year, only a pair in Alaska and the final OR store had endured.

With the shuttering of the two Alaska locations, that leaves one lone Blockbuster in Bend, Oregon, as the last holdout of the company's years-long demise.

Blockbuster has managed to keep locations open in Alaska longer than the rest of the country, thanks to the state's long winters and generally slow WiFi. I'll even cover your late fees if you come with me.

"Thank you for sticking by us throughout all these years".

"Alaska had always been - I always thought they'd outlast us", she said. The last two Alaska store leases end in August.

The company filed for bankruptcy protection in 2010 and parent firm Dish Network started closing U.S. stores in 2013.

In March, a store in North Pole, Alaska, closed down.

Blockbuster filed for bankruptcy back in 2011 and closed its last corporate store in 2014, signalling it was closing down all operations.

The statement says both Vey and Daymude have been with the company since 1991. Franchise owner Alan Payne told CBS This Morning last year that many people hadn't seen a Blockbuster store in several years.

Ever since the mid-2000s, Blockbuster has struggled to compete with Netflix and other streaming services.
