Some 65% of shoppers admitting they made plans to shop on Amazon during the Prime Day sale at least one day in advance, and 29% planned ahead at least one week in advance. But voice-driven purchases have yet to catch on, with only 1% of shoppers indicating they used their Alexa device to place a Prime Day order.

John Gillan, managing director for the United Kingdom and Northern Europe, Criteo, said: "Now in its fourth year, Amazon Prime Day is continuing to produce a halo effect for the wider retail community here in the UK". "Prime Day offers us a unique opportunity to thank Prime members with our best deals", said Jeff Wilke, CEO Worldwide Consumer, Amazon. Amazon also added more new Prime users than on any other day in its history. "Companies like Amazon, Apple and Disney have shown that building an emotional connection with customers comes from not focusing on the conversion, but instead improving the overall customer journey and removing friction points through new products and technology". Mr Pachter based his estimate on information the company did release, including that it shipped more than 100 million products and that small and mid-sized businesses sold over $1bn worth of goods in the first 24 hours.

"What started as basically a flash sale to drive site traffic has now grown into a multi-channel blitz of Amazon's private-label brands and in-store promotions, particularly with Whole Foods in the mix", he said. Members in Singapore ordered more items than ever before during the Prime Day shopping event, surpassing Cyber Monday, Black Friday and the launch of Prime Now in July 2017 when comparing the same 36-hour period.

Purchases on the site typically are done on a desktop, with the exception of holiday shopping.
