A look back at Serena Williams' 7 Wimbledon titles

Wimbledon Live Score

This was one of a clutch of strangely lacklustre all-Williams finals that played a role in the public's apathy.

It was only 10 1/2 months ago that Williams had far more serious concerns. Really soak in the improbability of what the 23-time Grand Slam champion has accomplished so far this tournament.

Goerges had come into her first Grand Slam semi-final having belted more winners (199), more aces (44) and more unreturned serves (113) than anyone else in the women's draw but those statistics counted for little when she came up against an opponent who is in hot pursuit of a record-equalling 24th major. One thing I can say on her behalf, that she may hopefully agree with. "I am a solicitor and I know how painful it is to go to work and then have to get up in the middle of the night".

This is the biggest question mark hanging over Angelique Kerber, who has hit some second serves this tournament at barely 60mph. "I honestly felt I would have done better in some of the earlier tournaments".

The American former world number one overpowered Germany's Julia Gorges 6-2 6-4, while Kerber beat Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko 6-3 6-3.

"Seeing her back, it's great", said Kerber, who has lost six of eight previous matches against Williams.

Williams watched Wimbledon from afar past year when her sister Venus lost to Spain's Garbine Muguruza but, in truth, it feels as if she has never been away after she dropped only one set as she progressed to a 10th Wimbledon final.

Five games in, Ostapenko led 3-2, and the numbers were still tilted toward her.

Kerber let 2017 French Open champion Ostapenko determine the outcome of almost every point. Kerber had beaten Williams in the Australian Open final in January, but the German couldn't produce another shock.

Remarkably, the 36-year-old was back in a Grand Slam final just 10 months after giving birth to her daughter Alexis Olympia. This is not inevitable for me, I had a really tough delivery and multiple surgeries and nearly didn't make it to be honest. Win or lose, she was defying odds and outperforming even the most optimistic predictions for her first year back on tour.

All of the time away pushed someone who's spent more than 300 weeks ranked No 1 down the rankings - she began Wimbledon at 181st, but was seeded 25th on account of her past success - and no one could quite be sure how the American would fare over these two weeks.

"Being here and having an opportunity to play is super great for me".

- After a barren six-year spell marred by Wimbledon final defeats against Venus and Maria Sharapova, it was Serena's time to regain her throne. Until the start of this tournament, that was the last match Williams played at Wimbledon. In the week leading up to her first-round match against Viktoriya Tomova, Williams posted a daily countdown on Instagram that included flashback Wimbledon photos and uplifting sentiments. That first game consisted of eight points: Three were unforced errors by Ostapenko, including a double-fault to begin the proceedings; the other five were winners by her, including a 100 miles per hour ace to close the hold.
