1 dead, several injured after plane crashes in South Africa

A Martinair charter aircraft crash-landed on Tuesday evening at the Wonderboom Airport, which is located near South Africa's capital Pretoria.

One person died in a plane crash in Wonderboom, Pretoria, July 10, 2018, emergency responders said.

Unconfirmed reports said one person was critically injured.

It said the Convair-340 was a US-built passenger plane that could carry 44 people.

Images from the site showed the plane broken into several pieces as paramedics helped survivors out of the aircraft and treated patients at the scene as firefighters tackled smoking wreckage.

South African emergency medical service ER24 posted photographs on its Twitter feed of passengers being rescued from the crash.

"Paramedics are treating the patients and will thereafter transport them to nearby hospital for further treatment‚" Meiring said.

The plane was a Dutch cargo MAC Martin's Air Charter owned by Air France-KLM.

According to Brandt‚ the plane was repainted in "the classic Martinair scheme for its imminent departure to its new home at the Aviodrome Lelystad in the Netherlands".

South African Civil Aviation Authority spokesperson Kabelo Ledwaba said its investigators were at the scene and would issue a statement.
