Your internet use could change as 'net neutrality' ends

Rally organizers carry away props following a protest outside the Federal Communication Commission building in Washington D.C. against the end of net neutrality rules on Dec. 14 2017

The Internet & Television Association said over the summer that it supported net neutrality but did not believe that the Obama-era regulations promote it.

Pai says Internet service will become cheaper and faster with the rules now gone. The FCC order that just took effect asserts authority to prevent states from pursuing laws inconsistent with the net neutrality repeal.

But only time will tell if the latest decision will lead to the slow death of the open internet as we know it - or whether the predictions have been too drastic.

Pai was also interviewed on CBS and denied that ISPs are likely to violate net neutrality principles despite the past examples of Comcast throttling BitTorrent and AT&T blocking FaceTime. At least 29 states have introduced more than 65 bills aimed at protecting net neutrality and seven states - Hawaii, New Jersey, New York, Montana, Rhode Island, Oregon and Vermont - enacted executive orders that made it illegal for state agencies to enter contracts with ISPs that don't uphold net neutrality. Ajit Pai, FCC chairman, felt that the net neutrality rules stifled innovation.

For anyone who hasn't been following, net neutrality is the concept of treating all internet traffic the same, no matter where it originates from. Last month, the Senate passed a last-ditch effort to overturn the FCC's repeal, but it never progressed to a House vote and was officially repealed Monday.

In particular, the repeal that went into place gives ISPs legal permission to create fast and slow lanes online - certain websites and content will load more slowly, while others will be blocked outright. Even some technology companies joined the fight to preserve net neutrality, including Mozilla and Vimeo. Many Democrats say the issue will help motivate younger people to vote in congressional elections this November, when all 435 seats in the House and a third of the 100-member Senate will be up for grabs.

Companies willing to pay more of these fees are essentially given higher priority, which means you could see a rise in subscriptions rates or monthly fees from content providers to offset the costs of these fees.

The Federal Communications Committee (FCC) was successful in repealing the net neutrality rules that the previous FCC leadership passed in 2015. It will head to the State Assembly, where hearings will begin in June and must be voted on by the end of August.

Today marks an official turning point in internet policy in the United States.

Pai argues that net neutrality was part of the FCC's regulatory overreach during the Obama administration.

"They will have the right to discriminate and favor the Internet traffic of those companies with whom they have pay-for-play arrangements and the right to consign all others to a slow and bumpy road", Rosenworcel added. Some states, like New Jersey, Washington, and California, have been actively working on state laws that would keep net neutrality alive within their jurisdictions.
