Yahoo Messenger Is Shutting Down After 20 Years

There is no current replacement for Messenger just yet, the company added, but it is working on a new group messaging app (in beta, currently) known as Yahoo Squirrel, which interested users can access here. The desktop version was killed off in 2016 and, with Yahoo! transitioning from a standalone company to a piece of Verizon's Oath content network, many chunks of the old Purple Palace are destined for the scrap heap. From July 18, 2018 on users won't be able to access chats and other services related to Yahoo Messenger anymore.

You will receive the chat history on your entered email ID. While users can download the data to your device, it appears that porting the history to another app won't be an option.

It appears the end of life is here for Yahoo Messenger. Oauth, the new parent company of Yahoo and AOL, sold Flickr recently to SmugMug, and shut down AOL Messenger AIM back in 2017.

First they came for AOL Instant Messenger, and killed it off on December 15 of previous year.

After July 17, the Yahoo Messenger app will cease to function.

One Twitter user said they even met their wife while using Yahoo Messenger. By 2018, the app ranked at 160 on iOS and 117 on Android. There was a time when Messenger meant Yahoo Messenger.

However, Yahoo Messenger could not keep up with messaging services from competitors such as Facebook, Apple, and Google. The Oath division was set up by Verizon to handle these. No other chat service came close. "As the communications landscape continues to change over, we're focusing on building and introducing new, exciting communications tools that better fit consumer needs", said Yahoo on its website.
