Will Announce Supreme Court Nominee July 9

President Donald Trump speaks to reporters onboard Air Force One Friday

A person familiar with the process said White House officials are focused primarily on five federal appeals court judges - Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett, Thomas Hardiman, Raymond Kethledge and Amul Thapar - all Republican appointees with conservative track records. "He's a great guy", Trump said.

Left-wing and right-wing groups have sprung into high gear since Kennedy's announcement on Wednesday that he would step down, putting the balance of the court on key issues like abortion and gay rights into question.

If Sen. Lee's bid to become a Supreme Court justice were to pass through Congress, then the governor of Utah would pick Lee's temporary replacement in the Senate, who would keep the post until the next general election.

Trump, who is in New Jersey for the weekend, said he plans to interview one or two candidates on Saturday or Sunday before announcing his nominee after the Fourth of July. Along with Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, Trump talked with pro-choice Republican Senators Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins, who could potentially tank a nominee they see as too hostile to abortion rights.

Below is the text of the letter Justice Anthony Kennedy sent to President Donald Trump announcing his retirement from the U.S. Supreme Court.

[Justin] worked closely with Mr. Trump when he was a real estate developer, according to two people with knowledge of his role.

McConnell declared that the Senate "will vote to confirm Justice Kennedy's successor this fall". That list includes six women. There are plenty of other instances where even when Trump scored a win, it was only after much unnecessary drama that undercut his original goal, from his foiled efforts to repeal Obamacare to the family-separation crisis sparked by his "zero tolerance" immigration policy.

It is hard to know how reliable such polling is, but for whatever it is worth: A significant number of voters in 2016 said - perhaps they were minting a retrospective rationale for an unpleasant act - that they voted for Donald Trump because they consider the Supreme Court supremely important, and they trusted Trump more than his opponent to fill the empty seat, the one occupied by Antonin Scalia until his death in February 2016.

He also said during the television appearance on Thursday, "Look, I'm someone who's been watching the Supreme Court since I was 10 years old".

He added: "I certainly wasn't anticipating a Supreme Court vacancy, but it's unaffected".

A sign that the White House is also focusing on these Democrats: Sen. "If I were John or Jerry or Bill, I'd say, 'Wait a minute".

Trump has acted quickly on his selection process.

Trump's legislative director Marc Short said the White House has begun conversations with several Senate offices.

West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin says it would be tough to support someone who would revamp the landmark decision.
